Acea Waidy Wow's compass takes us through the towns in the province of Latina that have been awarded the title of Orange Flag: a tourist-environmental quality stamp awarded by the Italian Touring Club. To obtain the prestigious title, the small candidate villages must meet strict hospitality standards, and must not exceed 15,000 inhabitants.

Latina is a young province, founded in 1934 with the name Littoria to group together the reclaimed areas of the Pontine plain. The region is home to sandy coastlines and nationally prominent seaside areas, such as Terracina, Sperlonga and Gaeta (Blue Flag beach for the 9th consecutive year), coastal lakes, breathtaking national parks such as Circeo and small corners of paradise gathered in the Pontine archipelago.

In this triumph of nature and culture, enclosed in the Pontine hills, citizens and tourists alike can admire the beauty of no less than four medieval villages: national gems that have demonstrated their ability to adapt to new sustainable trends, examples of slow tourism and tourist reception awarded the title of Orange Flag.

What to see in the Orange Flag villages in the province of Latina

Bassiano (LT)

Bassiano is the vibrant medieval village that is the birthplace of Aldo Manuzio, the famous Renaissance printer who invented cursive printing. The Museo delle scritture, located in Palazzo Caetani, is dedicated to this prominent personality: an anthropological account of the relationship between man and graphic signs.

Within the fortified old town, characterized by its distinctive spiral layout, a jigsaw puzzle of churches and small houses provides the setting for many culturally important folklore events, including the popular Ham Festival. Walking along the narrow streets that branch off the medieval walls, you can admire suggestive clusters of ancient limestone houses, until you reach Piazza S. Erasmo.

Campodimele (LT)

Italy's longest-living village: Campodimele is a small medieval village in the Monti Aurunci Regional Park. This little architectural gem offers interesting ideas for those who want to organize a Sunday excursion. It can easily be visited on foot, is dotted with churches and is surrounded by twelve cylindrical towers.

The bell tower of the Church of San Michele Arcangelo dominates the view, a striking example of religious architecture together with the monastery of Sant'Onofrio. From a naturalistic point of view, Campodimele is surrounded by a silent beech forest, an ideal location for hikers.

Fossanova (LT)

A tradition that unites abbeys, great philosophers and excellent buffalo mozzarella: Fossanova is located in the municipality of Priverno, around the splendid Abbey of Santa Maria.

The village is deeply attached to its historical identity. In August, a famous Medieval Festival is held that showcases all the typical flavours of the area; the Medieval Museum, on the other hand, allows visitors to appreciate life at the time.

Sermoneta (LT)

On a 257-metre-high hill, within mighty walls steeped in history, stands Sermoneta: a medieval town in the province of Latina.

The village boasts an architectural heritage dating back to 1200, with the majestic Caetani Castle, the Valvisciolo Abbey, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, and the churches of St Joseph and St Michael the Archangel. In Sermoneta you can taste local specialities during the polenta festival, experience music Pontino Festival and attend various medieval historical re-enactments.
